Navigating the Challenges of Gym Design: Two Success Stories
Zeroing in on Zoning: Two Gym Owners Share Their Stories
In the competitive world of fitness clubs, two gym owners, Kathy Thurston of The Real Gym in Roseville, CA, and Randall Hunt of Athletic Apex in Fort Worth, TX and Sanford, FL, have found success by focusing on their unique visions and overcoming challenges in zoning and design.
Thurston’s dream of opening The Real Gym was fueled by her passion for Olympic weightlifting and a desire to create an inclusive space for all fitness levels. After years of searching for the perfect location, she finally opened her 2,600-square-foot facility last March. The gym’s design, inspired by Thurston’s vision of an upscale warehouse, features six Olympic lifting platforms and a clean, black-and-white color scheme.
Hunt, on the other hand, was driven by a personal experience that led him to create his own program, Bionetics, to relieve chronic pain. His goal with Athletic Apex was to provide a unique fitness experience outside the traditional gym template. With the opening of his third club in Sanford, FL, Hunt was able to fully realize his dream of creating a small, exclusive club for elite clientele.
Both gym owners faced challenges in finding the right location and designing their facilities within budget constraints. Thurston had to search tirelessly for a suitable space for her weightlifting-focused gym, while Hunt had to make the most of a rectangular mall space for his exclusive club.
Despite the challenges, both Thurston and Hunt have succeeded in creating unique fitness spaces that cater to their specific visions and goals. Their stories serve as inspiration for aspiring gym owners looking to make their mark in the competitive fitness industry.
